Assam Flood Situation Turns Severe, Death Toll Climbs to 17
The flood crisis in Assam continues to worsen. As of June 4, six more people lost their lives, pushing the death toll to 17 in this year’s first wave of floods. Continuous rainfall has caused widespread damage across the state, making life miserable for lakhs of people.
The latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that over 6.5 lakh people across 1,506 villages in 21 districts are struggling due to floodwaters. Many areas have been submerged again, and the number of affected families keeps increasing every hour.
Sribhumi Hit Hardest, Followed by Nagaon and Cachar
Among all districts, Sribhumi has seen the worst devastation, with 2,31,536 people affected. Nagaon follows with 99,819 victims, while Cachar reports 89,344 people in distress.
Officials say the situation is turning critical in other districts too. Floodwater has entered houses, damaged crops, and washed away roads. In some places, entire villages are cut off due to the rising water levels.
Relief Camps & Distribution Centres Working Day and Night
The state government has set up 223 relief camps, giving temporary shelter to around 39,746 people who have lost their homes. Additionally, 288 relief distribution centres are providing food, drinking water, and essential supplies to affected families.
Despite these efforts, the challenges are growing. Many families are still waiting for help in remote and interior areas where access is tough due to water-logged roads and broken bridges.
Continuous Rain & Rising Rivers Make Things Worse
Lower Assam is receiving heavy rainfall since early morning, worsening the flood crisis. Districts like Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Goalpara, and Baksa are facing fresh rounds of waterlogging and destruction.
One of the biggest concerns now is the river levels. Seven major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above danger levels. The Katakhal River in Hailakandi has already crossed its highest flood mark at Matizuri.
Weather Forecast Warns of More Trouble Ahead
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has warned of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places across Assam in the coming days. Thunderstorms with lightning and winds reaching 30–40 km/h are expected in districts like Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, and Kokrajhar.
Because of the worsening conditions, road, railway, and ferry services have been disrupted. Many areas are cut off, and rescue teams are working day and night to save stranded people.
Assam Flood 2025: A Call for Urgent Help and Support
As Assam faces one of the toughest natural disasters this year, the people need urgent attention and support. The scale of destruction is massive, and with more rainfall expected, the danger is far from over.
The government, rescue teams, and local volunteers are trying their best, but with lakhs of lives at risk, the coming days will be extremely crucial.
