If you have a ration card in Assam, or you are planning to apply soon, here is an important update you must know. The Assam government has said that all ration card holders need to update their family details this month.
You must add new family members (like a newborn or newly married person) or remove names of those who passed away. This update is needed to get free 5kg rice per person, and also to receive new food and health benefits from October.
Make Sure All Family Members Are Listed – Or You’ll Miss Free Rice
Under the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme, every person listed on your ration card can get 5kg of rice for free every month.
If someone new has joined your family — like a baby, a wife, or anyone else — and their name is not on the ration card, they will not get rice or any benefit.
That’s why you should update the card now.
How to Add a New Member to Your Ration Card
Here’s what you need to do:
- Go to your nearest ration shop and inform them.
- Carry the new person’s Aadhaar card, PAN card, and Voter ID.
- Fill out the form to add their name.
- Your Panchayat office will check and approve it.
- You can also do it online, if you know how to apply on the website.
📝 Note: Unless their name is on the card, they won’t get free rice or other benefits.
Why You Must Remove the Name of a Deceased Person
If someone in your family has died, you must remove their name from the ration card.
The government has warned that keeping a dead person’s name on the card is illegal. It can even lead to penalties or jail in some cases.
To remove their name:
- Visit your ration shop or Panchayat office.
- Submit the death certificate and ID documents.
- Fill the removal form and submit it.
Your card will then be updated with the new list of family members.
Big New Benefits Starting October 1
From October 1, the Assam government will give more help to ration card holders.
Here’s what you’ll get at subsidized prices:
- Dal (pulses) at ₹25 per kg
- Lentils at ₹20 per kg
- Salt at ₹10 per kg
But remember — these benefits will be given only if your ration card is fully updated.
Ayushman Bharat Health Card Also Linked with Ration Data
The Ayushman Bharat ₹5 lakh health card is now being given through the ration card system.
Here’s what has already happened:
- 12 lakh fake or duplicate cards have been cancelled
- 62 lakh new, verified cards have been issued
This is to make sure only real and needy families get the food and health benefits.
You Will Need These Documents to Update Your Ration Card
To add or remove any name from the ration card, you must have these:
- Aadhaar Card
- PAN Card
- Voter ID Card
If you don’t have all three, your update may not go through.
Final Reminder: Update Your Ration Card Before the Deadline
If you want to continue getting:
- Free 5kg rice
- Cheap dal, lentils, and salt
- ₹5 lakh health coverage
…then update your ration card this month itself.
Visit your nearest ration center or do it online. Submit your documents and finish the process soon. Delays can cause problems or loss of benefits.
